Reparations Before Statuary

These drawings and time-lapse videos were created for tutorial demonstrations used in my online teaching in the spring. Quarantined in my wife’s family cabin in Northern Minnesota, we kept warm by making fires. We used old newspapers saved by her late uncle, Joe, as kindling. Amongst them, I found a Civil War battlefields tour guide which I used to eliminate statues of Confederate generals.

Falling Water Fountain

Falling Water Fountain combines two of my favorite modern art and architecture icons into a piece about the rising sea levels caused by global warming.

Oppressive Architecture

At first, I was confused about why the closet in my Kuwait apartment had a tiny bathroom behind it. Then I was shocked to discover the closet was intended as a bedroom for a domestic worker. An installation recreating a typical domestic worker’s living quarters was also to be built for the Ensaniyat Exhibition in April 2020.

About Abolish 153

The Abolish 153 campaign aims to overturn article 153 from Kuwait’s penal code, which effectively gives men regulatory, judicial and executive power over their female kin in blatant disregard of the constitution, international agreements on human and women’s rights and even the Islamic Sharia. This law states that any man who surprises his mother, sister, daughter or wife in an unsavory sexual act with a man and kills her or him or both will be treated as committing a misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of 3 years jail time and/or a fine of $50. The aim is to also build coalitions across the GCC and the Arab world to abolish similar laws across the region. Ultimately the goal is to create a safe environment where mothers, daughters, sisters and wives are protected from all forms of violence, to raise awareness of these violent practices and the legislation that sanctions them, and ensure the creation of safe houses for women under threat of violence, which are lacking in Kuwait. Abolish 153 supports not only legal change but those who suffer as a consequence of existing legislation. With no shelters or resources for survivors, our team has become involved in many cases and your support is essential for our continued ability to help those in need.

Penumbras

Penumbras was my first exploration into abstraction and a departure from my typical use of vibrant color. Over the years prior I rarely used the black and grey colored pencils that came with each set. I chose to investigate themes of loss, emptiness, and conflict with value, negative space, figure/ground ambiguity, and time. This work inspired me to further pursue video and performance work about war through the use of chess. This was my thesis project at Webster University and was part of the Contemporary Museum of St. Louis’s Flat Files Collection for the following ten years..
